Wirex brings crypto-linked Visa cards to U.S.

The London-based crypto payments platform has officially launched in the U.S. Wirex was the first to let customers make payments through prepaid Visa debit cards that are linked to crypto wallets.

Why should we care?
To put it nicely, many blockchain-based infrastructures are still beta testing real-life payments. Wirex’s strategy connects crypto to existing payment networks, taking advantage of the latter faction’s speed as well as acceptance across payment types and locations. A crypto-linked debit card also addresses accessibility concerns. Old-school consumers are more likely to accept crypto-based developments if they come in recognized forms like a Visa card. "We're excited to be able to empower American consumers, whether a hardcore crypto-enthusiast or a novice fintech fan, to experience the benefits of a digital economy," said Harold Montgomery, Managing Director of Wirex USA. The Visa partnership may also be read as a dress rehearsal for other cryptocurrencies that are in the works. The adoption of central bank digital currencies, for instance, will hinge upon private sector players that are knowledgeable in both blockchain and payments technologies. If it plays its cards right, Wirex could shape emerging landscapes in its image.
