The Next Chapter for WeWork
/After WeWork dominated news cycles in the autumn — as the media recounted the fall of the shared workspace company and its CEO Adam Neumann, whose hubris-fueled rise and fall was like that of a doomed king from a Shakespearean tragedy — you may be wondering what the company is up to now. You may even have thought it had ceased to exist.
Well, WeWork is still limping along, trying to pick up the pieces and salvage something of its business after the Neumann affair. Its leasing activity dropped a whopping 93% in Q4 of 2019, while simultaneously shedding thousands of jobs. This week, WeWork announced a new CEO to replace Neumann. Sandeep Mathrani is a real estate industry veteran and former CEO of the retail division of Brookfield Properties.
Mr. Mathrani certainly has his work cut out for him in digging WeWork out of the pit his predecessor put it in, and saving a company that has mostly become known for its excess.
