Caesar Sengupta, Google’s head of payments, to leave for ‘new mission’ next month
Google’s head of payments says he’s leaving the company for a yet-to-be-announced “new mission.” His last day at the company is April 30.
Why should we care?
Gupta’s impending departure from Google is the latest among a string of departures from large payment players, including Mahesh Mahatme, director of Amazon Pay India, who is reportedly moving to WhatsApp to lead payments in India. And just last week, Stripe’s former global head of partnerships Colin Kennedy left the firm to join payments startup Ramp. Sengupta led efforts to advance Google’s soon-to-launch bank account offering (Plex) in the U.S., in partnership with a network of banks. He also spearheaded the launch of Google Pay in India and the app’s relaunch in the U.S. and Singapore. He worked on initiatives including ChromeOS and Next Billion Users, which facilitated internet connectivity to hundreds of railway stations and public places in India and elsewhere. “We are light years ahead of where we were just a short time ago. You’ve helped digitize your economies, made Google feel local and driven Google’s investment into your countries to unprecedented levels,” he said, in a farewell message on LinkedIn. Sengupta did not say what he’ll do after Google beyond taking “some time to chill, talk to interesting people, reconnect with the external world and ride my bike.”
